I recently switched from XFree86 4.3.99.902 to xorg-x11 6.8.1-14.1 which
are made available for SuSE Linux 9.1 And now there are no more security updates in YOU or YaST repositories. In particular, for xorg-x11-server and xorg-x11-Xvnc packages which are the subjects of recent security announcements. What do I do now? Have I to switch back to XFree86, which would be regretfull? Or can I install the SuSE 9.2 xorg-x11 packages? Or could it be possible to build security packages for xorg-x11 6.8.1-14.1? I'll greatly appreciate to have lights on this issue, thanks. |

The best way would be to compile them yourself and use checkinstall instead of the "make install" step, this will build an rpm for install so that you will at least not get into as much of a dependency hell. Just make sure you have all the devel packages installed for the xorg and then compile the newer versions of the packages with the security fixes. HTH -- Mark Twixt hill and high water N. Thanks for the answer.
BTW I would like to know if it is possible to use the SuSE 9.2 xorg-x11 packages with the security fixes, in SuSE 9.1? or better yet, the xorg-x11 6.8.2 packages of SuSE 9.3? Are there such barriers between releases of SuSE linux that this should be impossible? Regards. |

That is something that I have never tried, the overall layout and where the files go has not changed and logic would say that they should work, however there could be underlying stuff that might cause problems, such as the fact that the xorg might have been compiled with a newer version of gcc, should not matter but might just covering my extremities in case it all goes down the tube :-) -- Mark Twixt hill and high water N. Just find the 9.1 dir, in the latest xorg dir, under the '.../supplementary/X/Xorg/' dir of your favorite mirror. The 9.1 version I could see was for the xorg 6.8.1 (no files for 9.1 under the 6.8.2 dirs): ...suse/i386/supplementary/X/Xorg/Xorg-X11R6.8.1/i386/suse91/ -- Kevin Nathan (Arizona, USA) Linux Potpourri and a.o.l.s. OK thanks all for counseling me.
I will not try to install 9.2 or 9.3 packages in SuSE 9.1, though I don't understand quite well why it is not possible. But now I have only two options : keep the xorg-x11 6.8.1-14.1 packages for SuSE 9.1 with the security issues or switch back to XFree86 with the security fixes in YOU. Or maybe someone can tell the SuSE repositories staff to build security updates for SuSE 9.1 and 9.2 in : ftp://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/suse/ftp...entary/X/Xorg/ This would be nice for those who was adventurous to upgrade KDE to 3.4.2 when YaST2 requires to swith to xorg-x11 because of dependencies problems. Please can someone ask them to do this ? Because it would be sad for me to go back after what I considered a success, I mean to switch to xorg-x11 and upgrade to KDE 3.4.2 in SuSE 9.1. Thanks again to everyone who may help in this matter. |

Have you tried installing a WinXP program on Win98? ;-) There will be dependencies like libraries and/or other programs in a certain version, but the version in 9.1 will be too old. Two options in this case that I can imagine now: 1. Install it and try it. If it doesn't work, you can easily uninstall it. 2. Do a test install, noting all dependencies. Then, start upgrading all the dependencies you wrote down. Might have to juggle them around because the order you update sometimes matters. After several hours/days of this, you may get it installed if all the dependencies could actually be installed successfully . . . :-) -- Kevin Nathan (Arizona, USA) Linux Potpourri and a.o.l.s.
