KDEnlive can do the job as well. Even just rip the sound off of the MPEG.

microchip is being far too modest. His own xvidenc or divxenc would do the job.
I'm a big kdenlive fan, but I think it might burp at a file of 1GB or so in size. |

I found handbrake and use it to convert movies to put on my Blackberry. It works great (so far). The interface is very friendly. Although I have not really run it with really big files, so I don't know how it will work with those. It converts MPEG, FLV, MOV, WMV, AVI. So far it has handled everything I have thrown at it.
