Angry Should I just try to dump ALL audio and start again?

I know I have asked before & OldCPU has tried to help, & that regular readers of my blathers will know that I have had a few problems with sounds in openSuse. Here are a few of the problems I have at current:

In NO particular order:

  • Google video = no sound
  • You tube = no sound
  • BBC radio (live streaming ) = no sound
  • BBC audio (listen again streaming) = no sound
  • Headphones do not mute speakers
  • End or restart KDE session plays sounds
  • Amarok does not play when using xine/autodetect
  • Amarok does not play when using xine/pulse audio
  • Amarok DOES play using xine/oss
  • Amarok DOES play using xine/ALSA; Speakers OK(ish), Headphones horrible (mp3)
  • When moving "LR Balance" in kmix, the slider is DIRECTLY tied to the MASTER Volume, ie, slide to full right balance, equally brings down master vol, so the further to the right, the lower the master vol slider follows to zero.
  • mplayer fell over when playing an .avi, BUT:
  • mplayer played mp3 fine. via speakers but horrible through phones.
  • mplayer plays .flv ok but with sound/lip-synch problems.
  • VLC Media played .AVI fine
  • VLC Played .mp3 OK via speakers horrible through phones(??? need more testing???)!
Here is as much info as I know how to provide:

Surely with this degree of chaos, there must be a simple way of stripping out ANY and ALL references to ALSA, PULSE, eitra? and in fact ALL audio apps, libs, etc etc etc and simply letting YAST rebuild from scratch, starting with just ALSA and maybe judiciously adding in others as needs arise???? And that this would be better than attempting to solve all of the above glitches one by one?

With regard to the flash no sound issues. Did you try removing the package: libflashsupport ?

This is likely a flash problem. Try caf4926's suggestion of removing libflashsupport.

This is likely because either (a) your PC's audio configuration was not properly autoprobe/autoconfigured at boot, or (b) you need an update that was incorporated in 1.0.19 or 1.0.21 of alsa: Search results - AlsaProject

Then your basic sound works, but we need to work on the headphone automute.

These read like codec problems to me.

Possibly caused by your not installing the packman packaged amarok, amarok-xine, amarok-packman, libxine1, libxine1-codec and xine-ui. Its also possible you installed videolan or other packages (as you have IMHO WAY TOO MANY repositories) and its possible some of those have caused this. I always recommend ONLY 4 REPOS unless one is sufficiently advanced to be able to (a) detect the problems if an extra repos causes a problem and (b) fix the problem. I do not think that is the case (being able to detect/fix) here.

From where did you get mplayer? avi is a wrapper. That does not mean anything to say "avi". What codec inside the avi ? Did you try other avi files with different codecs?

Again, to say 'avi' does not mean much. What codec in the "avi" ?

OK, so I note an AD1986A hardware audio codec on your PC, which is running 32-bit opensuse-11.1 with the 2.6.27.29-0.1-pae kernel.

Its also possible the 2.6.27.29 kernel update, broke the headphone/speaker automute behaviour of alsa, which for your PC was built for 2.6.27.9 of alsa.

To fix the headphone problem, you could first try to force a model option specific to your PC's hardware audio codec upon boot. For the AD1986A, according to the alsa-configuraton.txt file for 1.0.18 of alsa, the following options are available/listed (with a description):
Code:
	AD1986A
	  6stack	6-jack, separate surrounds (default)
	  3stack	3-stack, shared surrounds
	  laptop	2-channel only (FSC V2060, Samsung M50)
	  laptop-eapd	2-channel with EAPD (Samsung R65, ASUS A6J)
	  laptop-automute 2-channel with EAPD and HP-automute (Lenovo N100)
ultra 2-channel with EAPD (Samsung Ultra tablet PC)
So lets say you wish to try forcing one of these options. Start, for example, with the option "6stack". To force that, open the file /etc/modprobe.d/sound file and add a line to the start of that file (saving the change) such that it looks like:
Code:
options snd-hda-intel model=6stack
options snd slots=snd-hda-intel
# CvwD.+OF_NtUExp4:MCP61 High Definition Audio
alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
and then restart your alsa sound driver by typing su -c 'rcalsasound restart' and enter root password when prompted, restart your mixer (kmix in kde or alsamixer in gnome) and test your sound.

Note to edit the /etc/modprobe.d/sound file
  • in gnome type: gnomesu gedit /etc/modprobe.d/sound
  • in kde type: kdesu 'kwrite /etc/modprobe.d/sound'
and enter root password when prompted and save the change.

Test your sound.

If "6stack" does not work, pick another option from the list (say "3stack") and edit that file again, replacing "6stack" with "3stack". Restart alsa. restart your mixer, and test. Do that for each option, ONE at a TIME, until you find one that works.

If none work, post here, and we can investigate the other two possibilities:
  • possibly the update to 2.6.27.29 broke the automute, or
  • possibly you need a newer alsa version for your PC's hardware

what would have been more helpful is: "zypper lr -d " .... I do not know precisely what repos all of those are without the URL.

I recommend you remove all those repos in red. IMHO you are just one update away from totally borking your system.

You also have two OSS, and two Non-OSS. Only one is needed. You should IMHO remove one of each. I also can not tell where your "update" is. That needs to be added.

As noted, if you are not careful at this stage, you could end up doing something that will be difficult to recovery from. Those repos are IMHO a recipe for disaster.

Correction to the above, ... assuming "repo-update" is your update repos, then leave that repos in place.
Code:

Default Re: Should I just try to dump ALL audio and start again?

Thank-you so much for the advice guys and girls, I have not had time to do any work today, or even to fully digest the reply(ies) because the machine was needed by someone else, but I will have a bash as soon as poss. As someone else was using the machine I took the opportunity to do a few tests in MS Windows, it seems that the headphone not muting could well be a connection/hardware issue, as it is the same there...
I had already realised that my REPO state is a shambles having read other posts on the forum, by oldCPU and Caf among others. Time for a tidy-up!

It's a library interface for flash-player.

From YaST is says:
Quote:
libflashsupport - Additional support for Flash-based applications
Optional Library Interfaces for Adobe Flash Player
  • pulseaudio
  • ESD
  • OpenSSL
Supportability: unknown
But it seems to mess up audio for some. I have it without issue. IIRC most users I have "helped" with this are _64, does this apply to you?

Keep repos 5, 14, 15, 17. Remove / disable the rest. They are not nominally needed. They can be enabled for special updates only if you have specific reasons and understand the risks/implications of enabling them.
