I know I have asked before & OldCPU has tried to help, & that regular readers of my blathers will know that I have had a few problems with sounds in openSuse. Here are a few of the problems I have at current:
In NO particular order:

And that this would be better than attempting to solve all of the above glitches one by one?

This is likely because either (a) your PC's audio configuration was not properly autoprobe/autoconfigured at boot, or (b) you need an update that was incorporated in 1.0.19 or 1.0.21 of alsa: Search results - AlsaProject Then your basic sound works, but we need to work on the headphone automute. Quote:
Possibly caused by your not installing the packman packaged amarok, amarok-xine, amarok-packman, libxine1, libxine1-codec and xine-ui. Its also possible you installed videolan or other packages (as you have IMHO WAY TOO MANY repositories) and its possible some of those have caused this. I always recommend ONLY 4 REPOS unless one is sufficiently advanced to be able to (a) detect the problems if an extra repos causes a problem and (b) fix the problem. I do not think that is the case (being able to detect/fix) here. Quote:

Its also possible the 2.6.27.29 kernel update, broke the headphone/speaker automute behaviour of alsa, which for your PC was built for 2.6.27.9 of alsa. To fix the headphone problem, you could first try to force a model option specific to your PC's hardware audio codec upon boot. For the AD1986A, according to the alsa-configuraton.txt file for 1.0.18 of alsa, the following options are available/listed (with a description): Code:
AD1986A 6stack 6-jack, separate surrounds (default) 3stack 3-stack, shared surrounds laptop 2-channel only (FSC V2060, Samsung M50) laptop-eapd 2-channel with EAPD (Samsung R65, ASUS A6J) laptop-automute 2-channel with EAPD and HP-automute (Lenovo N100) ultra 2-channel with EAPD (Samsung Ultra tablet PC) Code:
options snd-hda-intel model=6stack options snd slots=snd-hda-intel # CvwD.+OF_NtUExp4:MCP61 High Definition Audio alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel Note to edit the /etc/modprobe.d/sound file
Test your sound. If "6stack" does not work, pick another option from the list (say "3stack") and edit that file again, replacing "6stack" with "3stack". Restart alsa. restart your mixer, and test. Do that for each option, ONE at a TIME, until you find one that works. If none work, post here, and we can investigate the other two possibilities:

You also have two OSS, and two Non-OSS. Only one is needed. You should IMHO remove one of each. I also can not tell where your "update" is. That needs to be added. As noted, if you are not careful at this stage, you could end up doing something that will be difficult to recovery from. Those repos are IMHO a recipe for disaster. |

Thank-you so much for the advice guys and girls, I have not had time to do any work today, or even to fully digest the reply(ies) because the machine was needed by someone else, but I will have a bash as soon as poss. As someone else was using the machine I took the opportunity to do a few tests in MS Windows, it seems that the headphone not muting could well be a connection/hardware issue, as it is the same there...
I had already realised that my REPO state is a shambles having read other posts on the forum, by oldCPU and Caf among others. Time for a tidy-up!
