But my problem with the sound is remaining.
Sometimes getting audio CDs to play is dependant on one's hardware, and I'm fuzzy on the details of this.

I vaguely recall it depends on whether there is a physical connection between one's CD reader and one's sound device hardware internal to one's PC. There may be a setting in your CD application software, where you can set digital or analog. Sometimes that stumps users. ... but as noted, I am "fuzzy" on this as it has been so long since I encountered this hiccup.

Dear Oldcpu,
As I wrote, playing a cd is now possible with mplayer.
What commune to every player, except mplayer is the quality (run-stop-run-stop), non continue flux reading.
The 3 of my cd/dvd drivers are connected hardware threw the ide flat cable, that's it.
Never got a problem with this hardware installation under winxp.
Is it an information about my hardware I could give you for further analyse ?
Message shown when I select the cd with mplayer:
"ioctl dif1 : input/output error"

winxp is winxp.

Linux is Linux.

As I noted, in Linux, for some multimedia apps, for playback of audio cd, one can select an "analog" or "digital" setting. That typically tells the Linux app to use the cable (direct to the sound device) or not to use the cable.

As also noted, I am "fuzzy" on this. Its been a VERY LONG time since I last looked at this (well over 5 years). Check the settings of your media players to see if there is a selection under "cd" audio that you can toggle.

For MPlayer, to make its useage easier, I recommend you install the packman packaged front end "smplayer". Vlc probably has a setting in the cd audio section. Same is likely true for "xine-ui" or for "kaffeine" or for 'kscd' ( ? - not sure of name of that app). I'm not at a Linux PC so I can't dig up the menu items for you, but in truth, it would be just as fast for you to look for this and test it yourself as it would for me. .... or perhaps someone who has encountered this recently, and knows the exact menu location can chime in.

Dear Oldcpu,
The problem was the set up audio output in the players.
I choose alsa typ plus the hw card of the machine.
Sound is ok and the players read the cd.
Thank you for Your precious help.

by the way , now the multimedia is OK, I also posted a thread in Hardware section regarding the installation of a printer (brother)
and have no answer so far.
Are you familiar with this kind of topics too ?

Bye

I know a bit about printing, but there are others on this forum who know way more. I also do not like configuring non-HP printers. I deliberately purchase ONLY HP printers because of the superior Linux support that HP provide, so philosophically I don't like providing support to other printer manufacturers whose Linux support is rather poor (I include brother in that category of poor manufacturer support).

I hope someone answers your printer thread.

I didn't now about it.
I personally don't like hp for their policy of software (too heavy under windows) and ink management (1 bottle black and 1 bottle for the 3 colors, only blue is empty, you change the whole cartridge anyway).
My printer is brand new, what will do ?
Fill up the cartridge with my tears
Hope somebody else will have some pity
Thank You anyway

Yes, agree I don't care for that aspect of some (not all) HP printers with that characteristic. ... but even then, to me thats less important than basic functionality, and often under Linux HP printers "just work", where as printers from other suppliers (such as "brother") can be difficult to get functioning.

Starting a separate thread, like you did, is the correct thing to do. Hopefully someone who knows a bit about Linux printer setup, who does not mind wrestling with a non-HP (such as brother) printer setup, will chime in to help you.

Dear Oldcpu,
I made a comparaison between the display quality of my installation under winxp and linuxSuse.
The result is lower for linux application. I decided, once again to try to define a better driver for my ati card.
Once again, bad idea.
The first time I did it, I installed the suse repository, uncessfully and have got to re-install the system.
This time, I downloaded a package from ati website. The result is equal, the system can't anymore.
The problem is probably because I have an agp card from sapphire wich is not compatible with the pci drivers available by suse or ati and unfortunatly not available by sapphire for linux application.
Instead of re-install the whole system again, I try now to set another card, pci (matrox).
The system won't run either. Fail safe aborts and normal get me in a terminal window where I don't know what to do.
- Is it a way to install from there another driver for this pci card or restore the original agp suse driver ?
- And for the future, is it possible to save a file somewhere (floppy, usb kee), to be loaded in such a position ?
- And the last one, it it a way to restore the configuration in an older date as it is possible under winxp ?

I wish you a nice weekend and thank You in advance for Your precious help.

I think you should start a new thread. A thread with the title "Media files" is not going to garner the attention of the people most qualified to help you.
