I am using KDE4.

Downloading and installing is finished. I just tried Kaffeine, Mplayer, SMPlayer, they all work now. No flashing red lattice.
One last question, where, in this forum, can read up on how to enable the 3D effects of OpenSuse? I saw it being demonstrated at the CeBit in March of this year and have heard much about it. I bought my graphics card, with the DDR3 RAM, specifically for it. Thank you very much for helping me out this weekend. |

Re; Nvidia have you not even tried installing the driver. If it were me my first choice would be to add the nvidia repo http://download.nvidia.com/opensuse/11.1/ Then use Software Management filter by repo and go to the nvidia repo you just added. Scroll down to the bottom and and click the box on the package: x11-video-nvidiaG02..... This should bring in everything else, then just accept. When it's done - logout and back in or reboot You may have to go to Yast - Hardware - Graphics and monitor And setup in there the resolution, screen and check the 3D box etc... Logout and back in again Make sure you don't use auto-login! If you do - switch it off. If things go wrong, the failsafe boot should get you back in to some sort of UI.

Then problem I have is not knowing which packages to install. I have an Nvidia 9800 GTX+ and so I installed the following packages when I installed Opensuse 11.1: nvidia-gfx G02-kmp-default - Nvidia graphics kernel module for GeForce 6xxx and newer GPUsI'm not sure if these are the correct ones to install, however I couldn't see that the others being offered would be the right ones : GeForceFX and GeForce4 GPUs I did check the Harware settings and 3D is checked. I probably didn't explain myself properly. I saw at the CeBit, one of the demonstrators, pressing a key on the keyboard then using the mouse, the screen became a 3D box and he could rotate it 90° to the next app he had running, he also mentioned that he was using compiz to do so. Unfortunately my friend was in a frenzy, he was on a winning streak with all the competitions and was anxious to get to the next drawing (he ended the day with prizes worth over €1800.00), so I didn't get a chance to ask how to enable that function. Since then I have moved to the Caribbean and finally my PC arrived. I have seen on seen some examples of this on Youtube, but haven't found a dumbed down version to explain how to enable this feature. Could you help me with that, please? |

I said just check the one x11-video-nvidiaG02
Everything else should just fall into place Eg; the kernel part. In your reply you list both default and pae, you only need one of those, depending on if you use pae or default kernel So do as I say, in the nvidia repo just check x11-video-nvidiaG02 And watch and see if the other packages don't get dragged in! Then accept or reply back if the packages don't seem to get automatically added.

Don't login as root.
Try this first. At the CLI login, where it says login: type your username followed by password now try typing: startx If that fails try failsafe, which is what I suggested earlier. Report back if none of these work

If the above fails we can do the following to get you back to where you were:
Pause the boot by moving the down arrow, then back up to the default boot. But now press backspace, it should delete any text where you can see VGA=...etc Remove all text and now type just the number: 3 and hit enter at the login type your user name and then password now type: su then the root password now type this: sax2 -r -m 0=vesa (N.B. the 0 is a zero not a letter) now reboot: type: reboot if you don't get a gui login login as user at cli and try this at the cli startx [/QUOTE]
