Default Desktop effects disable Youtube sound

I spent a good deal of time getting desktop effects to work again after I upgraded to 11.1. I had trouble getting the right nvidia driver installed.

Desktop effects work but when I play a video at youtube the sound and video "stutters" and is not usable. The video is delayed a long time before it begins to jump around and the audio is nothing but repeated screeches that temporarily survive the closing of the window. In one thread, it was suggested there was a connection with the video problem and desktop effects. Sure enough, if I turn off desktop effects and restart Firefox, the problem goes away.

Is there anyway youtube and desktop effects can live in harmony?

are you using gnome or kde? if kde which version?

have you tried disabling desktop effects one by one? if you use compiz you can start compizConfig by typing ccsm in a terminal.

Hi.

I don't know if my suggestion will help any, but we both shared the same problem. I hope to be of any help on how I worked arounde this.

I brought all my extensios and profile from 11 to 11.1 using the FEBE extension. One of my Extensios is the Stop Flash Script extension and the way I worked around this problem was to disable it and reinstall it.. That fixed my YouTube issue.

Good luck

Luis

Note: This fix was using compiz and emerald with KDE4 on OS11.1

I'm using kde 4.1 but not compiz. And, I'm scratching my head

I left all settings alone, waiting for some suggestions here. After a reboot, its all working again. Youtube works smoothly. I'm glad it's fixed, but it's frustrating not knowing what is going on. If it ever happens again, I don't have any tools (but a reboot) to try and get it fixed. It would be nice to be able to share a solution with others. Sorry.

I did look at audio settings, but didn't change any. Perhaps its the Heisenberg Principle. I changed things merely by looking at them.

i guess restarting the window server should be enough. in x this can be done by pressing str + alt + backspace. note: this will close all programs which were startet through x (and in future maybe disabled by default..).

Just as added note - and wondering myself, does KDE 4.x not use compiz by default (for the KDE effects) with the openSUSE 11.x series?

There was an interesting post in the openSUSE newsletter (week 52) about compiz on openSUSE 11.1 GM.
It's suggested that it's better to upgrade the compiz packages from the X11 repo and reconfigure compiz/your effects.

More info here : CyberOrg » Compiz on openSUSE 11.1

I've upgraded and cleared out the existing compiz config.. after that my X seems more stable. Had a couple of random X freezes that seem to have been fixed now.

Anyway.. could be rambling (as usual)

Cheers,
Wj
