    Default Geneva

I have tried, and I think succeeded installing this font.
    Geneva Font

It seems to work and scale fine in AbiWord and and OOwriter, but it does not display in firefox, it is horrible.

The above link shows a sample which is really very bad at all levels of zoom.

This site (I think this is the same problem) is also terrible, until I zoom to a very large size, when it smooths out.
    GNF - Gambling Network Forums

I have set the firefox smoothing to 0, so it is not that.
    (browser.display.auto_quality_min_font_size;0)

Here are screenies, if your browser shows the pages OK:

The last one is magnified in an image editor.

But here it is, zoomed with Firefox [ctrl + +], it goes smooth at a certain level of zoom...

    Here it is magnified:

    Any ideas anyone?

What exactly are you trying to achieve with this font that you need it over a font like liberation, that just works!

    Ah! Well the forum,
    GNF - Gambling Network Forums
is one I use all the time and has just upgraded to vBulletin™ Version 4.0.1
which is when the font went foobar. I opened "view source" and looked for fonts and found that it used Geneva, so I installed Geneva, I could set firefox to use my own chosen fonts but that would override all sites, and designers' careful hard work in choosing the appropriate fontage/typeset.
I am also intrigued that the Geneva sample page looks so completely horrible!

    Hi
How did you install? Running fonts-config (as root) and then as your
    user fc-cache may help.

TY Malcolm, I dl'ed the font, and clicked on it (!)
To my surprise, openSuse offered to install it, so I agreed. As I say it works fine in OO and Abiword..
I have to go out but will look into your suggestion later..

Ok tried that, apart from some complaints about Japanese,Korean,Vietnamese fonts, no problems seemed evident, and no change to the pages (I re-started FF, and rebooted BTW).
I have noticed that my signature in the other forum, despite, AFAIK, NOT being in Geneva font is also really jagged looking at normal zoom in FF but smooths out when zoomed...., so perhaps the problem is not Geneva at all. Most other websites look more or less fine...

PS, The sample-font page is an IMAGE, so it does not scale well (doh! Caf and others have already solved that one for me..)
But the GNF - Gambling Network Forums
page is still a real bugbear!

    Hi
Looks all fine here, with/without Geneva font. Have you set the dpi
    correct, what is the output from;
    Code:
    xdpyinfo |grep resol

    Hi
So if you go into the appearance settings for your DE, can you adjust
the dpi, because I think it defaults to 96.
