Default .avi codec?

hey crackers, i need a little help with opensuse 11.2. Got it installed from 64 bit DVD and everything went ok, but i am with one problem left, .avi videos (my tv shows are in that format) i can't find a codec that will play them, i tried win32codecs, gstreamer ugly, bad, and the gnome codecs one click thingy. Is there any specific for .avi? i got M4A/MP4 files to go, but .avi is still an issue (which even windows vista won't read only one that could read them was mandriva out of box support)

thanks in advance

Default Re: .avi codec?

Install mediainfo from Packman, use it on one .avi that won't play and post the information here.

Alternatively try smplayer/mplayer and see if it plays it.

Default Re: .avi codec?

there are no avi videos since an avi by itself is not a video format but a *container* which can hold virtually all video formats

.... also, do as Chrysantine said...... mplayer ftw!

Default Re: .avi codec?

That's MPEG-4 ASP (aka DivX), MPlayer can handle such without any problem

Default Re: .avi codec?

Typically, one gets their codecs from Packman in openSUSE by installing libffmpeg0 and ffmpeg (whose dependencies provide many codecs), w32codec-all, libquicktime0, and libxvidcore4. There are also other codecs that one can get from Packman.

For installing packages from Packman and in general, I recommend you keep ONLY 4 repositories enabled on your system. Just 4. Those 4 are OSS, Non-OSS, Update and Packman. Only those 4. No others. None. Only after one is an average skilled to advanced openSUSE Linux user, should IMHO one be keeping more than those 4 repos enabled. In particular do NOT enable and install apps other than libdvdcss from vlc, as the vlc apps are known to break the functionality of the packman packaged apps. There is guidance for adding those 4 repos here: Repositories - openSUSE-Community Again, ONLY the 4 that I recommend.

Chances are OSS, Non-OSS, and Update are already enabled and you only need to enable Packman. Note you can tell packman packaged applications by the "pm" in the version number.

Once you have those 4 enabled, you can go to YaST > Software > Software Management and change the "filter" to "search" and search for and install the apps that I recommended that will provide you with codecs. Wrt players, I recommend you install smplayer and vlc. And also install the packman packaged version (replace the Novell version) of libxine1 as many apps use the xine video and sound engine.

LOL banshee, you out of all apps chose the most terrible one

Also, follow advice of oldcpu.... Most people though prefer mplayer with smplayer as front-end

Default Re: .avi codec? [SOLVED]

thanks, some of the instructions didn't work, but a few did, and then mplayer itself was screwy it was like choppy, some error message was popping every half a second but it wouldn't show message in front it will just quick pop and pop. But gnome player front end for mplayer makes it work nice.

thanks.
