lost panel and system tray

Since installing the latest version of the Adobe installation software AIR, I have not been able to raise my task panel or the systray, etc. I have tried restarting the computer. I know that there are applications in the panel because when I click on my thunderbird desktop icon it comes up immediately. Also, listing the processes in a bash console shows that the applications are active.

The panel is set to appear at the bottom when my cursor is at the bottom edge of the screen and also to remain on top for at least 3 seconds.

I would be very grateful for any ideas on how to recover the panel.

If you are able to edit the properties of your panel on that bottom (or
top, or wherever) bar perhaps try to remove the Window List panel and add
it back. If it is not there add the Window List panel and see if that
helps. It may also be worth setting up a new user quickly to make sure
this is user-specific:

sudo useradd -m newuser && echo 'newuserpassword' | passwd --stdin newuser

Thanks very much for the advice. I did create a new user and logged in. the panel was at the bottom. So, yes, the problem is user-specific.

How do I edit the panel properties if I can't raise the panel? I haven't been able to find the shell command.
