I would think that a dual 800Mhz PIII system with 1G would do fine. The P4 was simply designed for the megahertz race. The Core (contemporary) designs are more PIII-ish. There are a couple of cases where the higher clock frequency matters... but overall, you'll probably get more out of the dual PIII system. Put a couple of dual 1.4Ghz PIII's in it and you'll best many dual Xeon 3.0Ghz machines out there... |

I'm basing my opinion on my own experience with the P4 and P4-ish Xeons. I had some DL380G2 platforms with dual 1.2Ghz PIII Xeons that seemed to perform much better than the DL380G3 with even 2.4Ghz P4 style Xeons in it. YMMV of course. |

Well, baught me another simm...
I'm loving it... I really didn't want to get rid of the 'pretty' black IBM WS. It's old but the old ones have always been great Linux WS'. Now this one is too. I have it running nicely so when my Mom comes up to visit, she can use it.. she'll never know it's Linux. Thanks to all who had something to say, to all i say, i like it. (oepnSuSE, 11.1 - KDE 4). Just wish i could edit things more easly. p.s, you've got to try 'Namoroka' (firefox 3.6b2 pre).. Nice. just can't figure out how to change the language to Russian (Руссийка). LandisReed |

cjcox,
it's running nicely with added memory. the dual PIII 800, can't get it to boot, sees the drives, but that's it.. will not boot to any of them in any configuration.. i think the controller (onboard) is bad. have a ATA SCSI controller that reports DVD.... oh, well LandisReed. |

// Edit //
Posted to wrong thread.. Sorry !!! // Edit // Nope !!!!! Still locked up.. no ctrl esc, kill, no ctrl f# for desktops, Nothing... this time it took an hour or so to lock up (freeze). worked fine in the meen time. Any ideas? the other day i noticed that the usb mouse would lagg badly when first moved, after being idel for some time, so i shut down and attached a ps/2 mouse, seemed to work fine... but that was a few days ago... power management problem?? thanks in advance, LandisReed. i'm digging most of 11.1 with KDE 4 and Namoroka (FireFox 3.6b.2pre)...
still don't like the lack of drag n drop in a lot of things, but mostly in konqueror4.... Dolphin Sucks! p.s., i'm using the IBM P4, added memory and it is Rock Solid! Not worries here. LandisReed. Спасибо! |
