Default Nautilus 99% CPU

Nautilus eats 99% CPU when I start browsing through certain folders and never finishes with this. Quite annoying, as I always have to kill it then. Gnome actually says; doesn't respond, should I quit?

The weird thing is that I can browse through the same folders with Firefox when I want to upload a file. I would think it uses same subroutines as in Nautilus.

Anyway, although I like Gnome a lot, I'm considering to switch to KDE because it is unworkable.

Removing the .nautilus in my home directory doesn't help.

2.6.27.29-0.1-default #1 SMP 2009-08-15 17:53:59 +0200 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Gnome 2.24.1

are those "certain folders" on the same hard drive and petition that
the system files are on? or,
different petition? or,
different hard drive? or,
connected via USB, or,
different machine? or,
distant network? or,
network data having too many collisions? or,
different operating system? or,
what??

and, what is the file system in use on those certain folders?
is the partition of those folders horribly fragmented?
is the drive is healthy?

and, what is in those "certain folders"? that is, if it is full of
(say) photos that have to be read and rendered as a graphic...then,
that is gonna take some heavy computation power...make the graphics
smaller or turn off preview in those folders..

my point is the slowness and problem might have little or nothing to
do with Nautilus itself but instead where the folders are and what is
in them..

Same partition as OS, fs, no fragmentation, only 300MB, normal files, no special things. No network, no other machines, links to other files.

Just some directories and files.

Du -sch * gives immediately 294MB
dir * also works fine

So it seems all file info is accessible.

hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm...i give up....well, just for fun you might try using
YaST (or zypper) and update Nautilus...maybe some little bit of code
got scrambled somewhere...otherwise, i have no idea...so, i turn you
over to the real guru . . .

hmmmm....are these folders in your /home? maybe try adding a new user,
give that new user permission to browse that/those directories and see
if the problem persists..

just scratchin' and reachin'..

I took your suggestion: logged in as root under Gnome I have no problems browsing through the folders.

Under the account itself I can browse without problems through it with konqueror.

All in all very weird, there are no hidden files etc in the folder, no special things. I tried to attach gdb to the crashing nautilus, but in some weird way gdb doesn't react anymore to ctrl c after nautilus gets killed by gnome itself (i.e. I cannot print the stack stuff etc).

i did *not* suggest you log into Gnome as root..

instead, i suggested you ADD a new user, and log in as that NEW user..

you should NEVER log into KDE, Gnome or any other *nix GUI (that, some
people say is an opinion...do as you wish...it is your machine..you
may log in any way you wish)

read again what i wrote: "try adding a new user, give that new user
permission to browse that/those directories and see if the problem
persists.."

you can do all of that without logging into Gnome as root, and while
browsing as that new user look at the cpu usage..

Well, I took your suggestion and altered it a bit. Anyway, after browsing as root through the folder the normal user is again able to look into the folder again without crashing!

No idea why, but I'll be back if the problem arises again.
