Post installation - Desktop, seamonkey and Firefox

Hi,

I have just installed Suse 11.1 from 10.2 which I installed in August 2007.

I have been able to find a manager which shows my old desktops with my wallpaper, but this does not show on my desktop now.

I suspect I now have kde4 is it possible to return to kde3?
The bottom panel is black how can I change this?
Where have the screen savers gone? The bouncing cow and the matrix for starters.

When I plug in a device,it no longer shows on the desktop, but in device notifier, but I can't find a safely remove/umount. Don't I have to do that anymore?

These are my minor problems.

My major problem is I used to use two browsers Seamonkey as my personal one and Firefox for groups I moderate.

I have installed Seamonkey using Yast, but when I click on it, it goes to my homepage briefly then disappears?

Firefox is fine, however the plugin I use with it is not longer working, because Java is not installed.

When I verify it says the Java version is 1.6.0_0

It then gives instructions for installing Java here:

I am never very successful with a terminal, so I have used Yast to install Java 1.7.0.

Please can someone give me instructions on how to install Java or how to enable and configure so it will work with the Firefox plugin?

I had trouble adding the repository, but once I was onto the video it was fine and written instructions helped. I now have KDE3 back.

Right, I am 1/2 way to solving this one now.

When I carried out my installation of Suse 11.1 I updated via the icon on the desktop panel. Also when I downloaded the repositories I updated then.

However when in Yast software management, I noticed that there was a online update configuration and online update.

I set the online update configuration and I went onto online update, there were 5 patches waiting one of which was the Java I needed.

So this morning when I checked, I now have the right Java.

Please can someone help me with the next part:
At Java website click on 'enable and configure' it takes me here:

I then click on Firefox which takes me here:

No.1 says:
Go to the plugins sub-directory under the Firefox installation directory
cd <Firefox installation directory>/plugins

I now know that it is here on my machine,/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins

No.2 gives an example.

Then there seems to be a 'get out clause'
If you install Firefox 1.5 or later, you can enable the Java Console menu item in the Tools menu. Change directories to the Firefox extensions directory, then unzip ffjcext.zip there.

cd /usr/lib/firefox-1.4/extensions
unzip /usr/java/jre1.6.0/lib/deploy/ffjcext.zip

So this bit:

If you install Firefox 1.5 or later, you can enable the Java Console menu item in the Tools menu. Change directories to the Firefox extensions directory, then unzip ffjcext.zip there.

cd /usr/lib/firefox-1.4/extensions

Is all greek to me and I then feel truly beaten.

I have got slightly further with this. Someone suggested I run Seamonkey as root. Seamonkey loads fine, but of course I don't want to run Seamonkey as root. Also it is clean, none of my bookmarks or preferences etc.

This is the error message I get when I run Seamonkey as me:
/usr/bin/seamonkey: line 330: 6099 Segmentation fault $AOSS $MOZ_PROGRAM $MOZ_LANG "$opt"

Any help gratefully received.

when you installed seamonkey, did you install all the modules required ? I also use Seamonkey & the only time i came across that was when i forgot one of the modules ( can't remember which,now )

Hi Andy,

I don't know? I installed Seamonkey through Yast, so I would have thought it would have done all the bits. When Seamonkey doesn't work it looks like it is picking up from my /home/nappy, because I see my old homepage which is google mail.

If I can't get Seamonkey to work then I don't mind using another browser as long as it is possible to import my Seamonkey settings.

thing to try, rename your .mozilla to .mozilla.old & start Seamonkey. It could be that your version is not up to date,you should be on 1.1.17-1.1. if renaming your mozilla folder gets it working, just copy things one at a time into your new folder to see which one causes it to fall over.

An update my homepage for Seamonkey was Google Mail. I have just realised that the problem is to do with that home page.

When I have run in console it loads an error page, as long as I don't go to Google Mail it doesn't shut down. So I will try your suggestion above and anything that looks like Google mail I shall leave.

I have come back from holiday and I am still stuck with this one.

I now believe that I have linked Java and Firefox, but the verify Java page tells me, 'Your Java version is 1.6.0_0'

I would be really grateful if someone could help me with this, I'm am not sure what information I need to provide so you can see where the problem is?
