I'm not sure if compiz is preinstalled with KDE since it has its own desktop effects built right in. Have you tried Kwin's desktop effects? To do this go to the Application Launcher (k-icon or green openSUSE lizard) then Applications, then Configure Desktop (Personal Settings). Under Look and Feel choose Desktop. There you'll see Desktop Effects. If it already isn't checked, check Enable desktop effects. Then under All Effects you can check various things to see if they work.

Make sure this works FIRST (it should), then I'll help you out with compiz.

Good Luck,

Ian

Yeah, that works, to a degree.

Some effects are present - shadows under windows, translucency etc. The cube, however doesn't work. Activation is Ctrl-F11 or mouse in the top-left corner, but the cube doesn't appear, the desktop becomes opaque and I can switch to the next desktop with a mouse movements, but there's no cube.

The cube is enabled in Kwin, it just doesn't work as I hope it should. If it did, I probably wouldn't need Compiz in the first place.

Whatever changes I make, nothing happens - no exploding or wobbly windows, for example. Aren't the changes supposed to apply in real time, without restart?

It will take me a while to go through that Compiz thread, kind of busy at the moment.

Yes they are. Make sure Under the Advanced tab your composite type is OpenGL. And also make sure that in the graphical Sax2 that 3d acceleration is enabled.

Good Luck,

Ian

Can't change compositing to OpenGl, get the error:

Check your X configuration. You may also consider changing advanced options, especially changing the compositing type.

It reverts to x-render after that.

Haven't got round to Compiz yet, but would it work without OpenGl?

I get OpenGl screensavers working fine, though.

I'm not sure. I've never used x-render. I just know it limited what I could do with Kwin. Did you check for the 3d acceleration enabled in the graphical Sax2?

Yes, 3d is enabled.

Why is OpenGl doesn't work in Kwin? Will it work in Compiz?

I'm afraid my off for a long weekend already, back on Monday.

Thanks for all the help, I'll use instruction from that Compiz thread, see how it goes.

Alright. If it doesn't work we can always try the proprietary Nvidia driver. Just post back with any questions.

Good Luck,

Ian

Ok, uninstalled all previous Compiz packages, installed from one-click page, Yast gave me these two errors(below). I chose "ignore some dependencies", Fusion Icon didn't download, as predicted.

Tweaked Compiz settings as recommended in that referred thread - enable Emerald and so on.

No Cube, no wobbly windows.

Emerald Theme list in empty.

Window effects are still from Kwin, I guess, Compiz process is nowhere to be seen in system monitor applet.
