I already posted a screenshot of my openSUSE 10.3 desktop. This is my brand-new, all-shiny Mandriva 2009. The only thing I changed is the color scheme (I selected slightly lighter one, I think). ![]() What pleases me is fonts configuration. Also, overall appearance is quite good, and I'll definitely give it a try. OpenOffice, gimp, pidgin and Firefox are inlined with KDE apps, and Lotus Notes looks quite good. I also installed a few KDE3 apps, which share the overall appearance of KDE4 apps. Besides that, NVidia is supplied with the installation CD, some beta version, and it works with compiz, logout from KDE session works (on 11.1 all I got is a black screen; problem with kdm I guess). To be fair, I have to mention that opensuse provides much more software (no sudo on mandriva cd!) Cheers, Davor |

Whom mentioned? I mentioned style and theme.
... Selection of style and theme in some cases can have a direction impact on the presentation of one's fonts (under KDE).Quote:
What I was asking, was something more along the lines of a screen print of the output of KDE3's: Configure Desktop > Appearance and Themes > Fonts ... what is selected for General, Fixed Width, Toobar, Menu, Window Title, Taskbar, Desktop, and in the field "use anti-aliasing" / "configure" and Force fonts DPI ? Mandriva using KDE must have something similar. Also, under Configure Desktop > Appearance and Themes > GTK Styles and Fonts, what is selected in Mandriva of "Use Style" ... and for "GTK fonts" ... Also under Configure Desktop > Appearance and Themes > Style > Style what is selected under "Widget Style" ? Mandriva surely has an equivalent. Thats on KDE3. Upon looking again, you are using KDE4. KDE4 has similar settings but the menu navigation is different. |

For others.. if you're running (an older) microsoft office version under wine, the 2007 to old format converter is available for free at the microsoft site and comes with the Vista fonts. Not quite sure what the legal requirements are for installing it and leeching the fonts, if you don't have an office version (as they're obviously meant for that use) you might wanna send a mail to microsoft first.

For GTK apps, I cannot see where to change the settings within GUI, but mingling through /etc/gtk and /usr/share/themes/ would reveal the configuration. Widget stlye is laOra-Qt (never heard of :-), which is default, and probably some Mandriva specific one. Cheers, Davor |

![]() All my apps share the same overall appearance: GTK, SWT, KDE3, KDE4... Looking at yours... Look at "File" in Firefox and Dolphin. These "Fi" clearly look different. In general Firefox and Dolphin fonts look different... I suppose that's something from GTK/QT in general. No, typeface isn't visible. "Monospace" and "Sans Serif" are just aliases for the real fonts. We would need a "fc-match monospace" to know which typeface are you using. |

So you all think Suse fonts are ok? Try using OSX Leopard on Mac G5, then switch machines to linux. Well gotta' tell ya, get with the program Suse! Some way ago (Suse 9.3) MS got hot about their Clear Type thing and ever since linux fonts are garbage. The type is never set for screen rez, width, height, sharp. Just keep fighting linux fonts, makes me tired
