Default Problem migrating Kontact KDE 3.5 to KDE 4.1

After upgrading openSUSE 11.1 from 11.0 (using the Upgrade option at installation), I (naively) assumed it would upgrade the applications.

However, I have the following situation with Kontact under kde 4.1:
- kmail : shows my inbox, but did not import settings (e.g. accounts) from kde3.1;
- Contacts: doesn't show my contacts;
- Calendar: doesn't show my calendar
- To-do lists: don't show
- Feeds: don't show
- Journal: don't show
- Popup notes: don't show.

So here are my questions:
1) is the migration supposed to be automatic, as suggested by the use of 'upgrade'? If not, people should be made aware of that.
2) Where can we find a user-friendly how-to for this migration? I could not find anything recent and openSuse specific.

Thanks.

Andre

Note: this is frustrating, because 4.1 looks great!

I had almost the same thing, but in my case I upgraded from opensuse 11.0
KDE3 to opensuse 11.1 KDE4. I did find my contacts, but not my

You'd think an upgrade would find all the programs you were using and
migrate them to the upgraded versions of the programs without losing the
settings, wouldn't you? Otherwise it's not so much an upgrade as it is a
new installation.

As far as I can tell, there isn't one.

Actually, I don't like the look of KDE4.1 at all. I don't like the menu
changes, the removal of functions in Konqueror (It no longer shows all your
storage media, for example), and I hate the way nothing is where it used to
be.

It is probably a little faster, deals well with nfs networks, and has lots
of eye candy, if you're interested in that sort of thing. I tried 11.1 w
KDE4, 11.1 with KDE3.5 and 11.1 upgraded over 11.0/KDE3.5. My conclusion is
that there a still a few glitches (for example with Yast that doesn't ask
if you're finished installing software, it just disappears) that aren't
serious in 11.1, but that I don't like KDE4. I don't see any reason to move
from 11.0/KDE3.5 with this release.

I really hope KDE4 will be improved enough by 11.2 to make it worthwhile
installing and learning all the differences.

Hi Andre,

you have to copy following files/folders:

".kde/share/apps/kmail" to ".kde4/share/apps/kmail"
and afterwards create you identity and configure your pop and smtp data in KMail.

"/.kde/share/apps/knotes/notes.ics" to "/.kde4/share/apps/knotes/notes.ics"

".kde/share/apps/korganizer/std.ics" to ".kde4/share/apps/korganizer/std.ics"

do the same with the to-do lists, feeds...

I hope this would help

Greetings

Michael

After experimenting a bit I found all settings for the respective Kontact components work fine by copying the entire directory structure from ~/.kde to ~/.kde4. It was faster than trying to figure out the exact filenames to copy over for the settings.
