DVD image is still downloading... Is it worth me trying ndiswrapper in the meantime?

Yeah, I did click skip...

Right-clicking knetworkmanager gives:
wlan0
connect to other network -> my network name
eth0
No carrier
etc...

I have a 'link' light on my access point now, so doesn't that mean I should be good to go?

But I'm still not connecting to anything...

Doesn't the fact that it's asking me if I want to connect to another network mean I'm currently connected to a network?

I've checked over all my router settings a kajillion times, so I'm positive that's all OK...

It should just be right click and click on your connection.

In case it helps anyone else in the future, I found this article Wireless will not work when dual-boot with Windows XP&Vista. It didn't help me, unfortunately

DVD download got to 4GB and failed, so I'm starting that over, although I'm considering giving up on the whole thing at this point...

If you haven't already thrown away your 4GB download, you can finish it with bittorrent. Also I hope you are not downloading with IE (6 or 7) as they will stop at 2 and 4 GB respectively. Best is if you can use a download agent like say aria2c which can definitely handle large files, even though it's a CLI program.

Well, there's my mistake... IE7 on my son's box - it stopped dead on 4GB. Anyway, I started it again with a download manager in Firefox and am getting way better speeds this time, so it should be done soon. Not really sure what the purpose of downloading the DVD is now that the driver I needed is installed and working and I still have no net access

Well don't give up on the WNIC yet, if there are any reports of it working with any version of Linux, it should be possible, even if you have to go to ndiswrapper. If you can see wireless network names on the air, that's a good sign, what may be happening is that you are not able to authenticate correctly to the AP.
