SuSE 11 - window behaviour - jerky slow

Hello,

I have installed SuSE 11 and have updated with the current patches including a patch to the Kernel. The kernel version is 11.0-2.6.25.11 - 0.1

For the two or so weeks prior to the installation of the patches, SuSE worked perfectly. There was no lag with typing, or opening windows, or scrolling.

Now, windows scroll incredibly slowly. System monitor shows virtually no CPU usage. Eg. 1% Firefox, and Ksysguard 3%.

When I type, there is a lag. Firefox is very very jerky and slow. OpenOffice use is a bit faster. Konqueror is jerky.

It is a bit like an older gentleman slowly shuffling with a cane in hand.

Any suggestions? I really do not want to re-install the o/s. But the system is rather unpleasant to operate at the moment.

By the way, my machine does not use an Nvidia card.

The machine has never acted this way with Suse back to 9.1.

You are right.
I also create a thread for it with "became slow...".
The same thing is happening with me.
Everything is slower than b4.firefox,refresh takes time,minimize and maximize etc.

Tell us more about your PC
It sounds like a graphics issue
You say you have no graphics card, so you must be on-board
You need to explain what you have

If graphics driver gets messed up, type 3 in the grub boot line to get runlevel 3 - login as root

type
sax2 -r -m 0=vesa

reboot
this should enable a display using vesa

I'll try your suggestion shortly.

But first, here is the content of my system log. At about 18:00 hours, the system worked well. An hour or so later, after installing updates, the system turned spastic.

Note the last entry.

Interestingly, the opensuse form window in which I am typing, works fast and normally, unlike the parent Firefox window.

Umm.
Looks like you have some usb connections there!

There was a kernel update, did you do that? You will have noticed because tells you to re-boot.

Sometimes you will need to re-compile drivers to your kernel. Only you know if you have any.
For eg; some people manually compile their video driver rather than using the repo's - after an update you will need to re-compile.

Okay. I did download a kernel security patch. That is the cause of the problem.

So, I went into Sax2 and dropped the colours to 64k. This speeded up the system somewhat but it remains jerky. And the colours are dreadful.

I have never before (used Suse since 7.1; and since suse 9.1 on this machine) needed to recompile video drivers. I have always accepted default drivers on install.

Unless anyone has any thoughts, I think I will simply re-install the operating system and then not add the kernel security patch. I will give it a think overnight.
