It seems that the dmesg errors
cx22702_readreg: readreg error (ret == -6)
cx22702_writereg: writereg error (reg == 0x0d, val == 0x00, ret == -6)
are the key to this problem.
I have done some Googling too, and there are many references to problems with the cx22702, two of the most interesting being

here. The problem is that they mostly concern other distros, and there are no clear solutions. I have tried the solution given if the first link, but without success.
It is VERY frustrating, because I feel the solution is not too far away, but that I just do not have the knowledge to find it!
