This is often caused by graphics hardware/driver. You have a better chance of resolving this with useful help if you can provide more info about your hardware and which desktop environment you are using. For the former do:

FWIW, I'm using openSUSE 11 with ATI chipset (fglrx proprietary driver) and KDE 4.2.4, and I experience problems with system coming back up from suspend. It seems to occur randomly, but I end up needing to do CTRL-ALT-F2 to bring up text console, then CTRL-ALT-F7 again to get desktop back. If I don't, the hard drive activity never ceases and the process never completes.
