I have very little experience of WLAN so I'll let the experts take over. I know it's kind of hard to get bootstrapped when the network interface isn't up, but don't lose heart, I'm sure you can win the battle.

Maybe you might want to consider getting the wired Ethernet interface running with your broadband router so that you can enjoy some of the benefits of using Linux online to spur you on. Is that possible or is there too much distance to run a cable?
