Okay. I did download a kernel security patch. That is the cause of the problem.

So, I went into Sax2 and dropped the colours to 64k. This speeded up the system somewhat but it remains jerky. And the colours are dreadful.

I have never before (used Suse since 7.1; and since suse 9.1 on this machine) needed to recompile video drivers. I have always accepted default drivers on install.

Unless anyone has any thoughts, I think I will simply re-install the operating system and then not add the kernel security patch. I will give it a think overnight.
