Both: I have been using VLC (and jetaudio sometimes) on my "old" dell, running XP. And in March, I bought a laptop with vista. And it provides pretty good pictures as well.

Nop: since VLC embeds all the codecs needed, I have not to install such a codec pack.

hardware: I haven't changed it since this morning, lol: still the buit-in video card, by Intel
Desktop: Gnome, with or without desktop effects, it doesn't change anything in the quality (is it that you call 3D desktop?) But they're installed, for sure!

the rpm query claimed alsa-plugins-pulse is installed on my PC because it was before RedDwarf
suggested to remove it. And that was what I did.
And, regarding "what driver in your xorg? " I'll tell you when I know who is that guy! Some relative of
Zorg?
