Neither. [I object to the phasing of the question...it mistakenly assumes
that I did NOT install from the KDE LiveCD, which I did.]
Thus, I had to go out of my way to install KDE 3.5.9, because KDE-4.0.4 is
the DEFAULT (a Novell mistake, in my view).
(I already had an 'experimental' Debian distro to evalutate KDE 4's progress.)
