Assuming it is an issue with policykit, try logging in as root, and see if the usb device automounts ok. I have seen some 'fixes' if this is the case.

Another possibility is that your fstab contains an entry preventing automounting. Check with 'cat /etc/fstab' just to make sure. Post the output if you need to.
