Gosh, this is something I learned from the "school of hard knocks", as opposed to the one of theoretical science.
ie by playing with the levels, and by reading about the experience of others, I discovered that 100% isn't best.
I assume its because at 100% one is slightly over driving the corresponding analog amplifiers within the sound card/chip into a non-linear range, ... but in truth I really don't know.
