when i search the repositories for w32codec-all, i can't find one. can't find one by googling it either so i'm guessing maybe there isn't one for the ppc architecture??? [/b]
I did a quick check, and I think you are correct. My recommendation does not appear the best here for w32codec's on a PPC. Perhaps some other PPC users could chime in here.

i checked and libxine1 was not installed. i installed it and upgraded kaffeine and totem to the latest versions, and everything is working now i am glad to say.[/b]
Thats interesting to note. Thanks for sharing your solution.

You may also wish to try mplayer (again) with smplayer as a front end to it.

There is a packman packager rpm/packaged PPC version of smplayer, and its possible by using it as a front end to mplayer, you will get mplayer working with DVD videos.
