Thanks all for the advice.

I spent a couple of weeks setting this PC up for a computer illiterate friend, so if I can help it, I'll avoid the re-install. I'll let you know how I get on with just using the 32bit install.

I've got my /home on a separate partition so if I have to I can do a clean install.
