What keyboard character are you using after "dmesg"? I don't see any vertical line character on my keyboard. The closest thing I have is a capitol "i".

dmesg | grep tty

FWIW, I have another workaround for anyone who is interested in getting a serial to usb converter working in 10.2. Just install 10.1 first, get the converter working there and do an upgrade to 10.2.

I updated my kernel to 2.6.18.8-0.3, hoping that the usb to serial non-detection problem would be fixed, but as far as I could tell, the device was still not detected. FWIW, I'm using a converter that uses the pl-2303 chip.

Somebody needs to fix this problem.
