I am new to this whole Linux thing and fixed a problem that others may be interested in -

I am a Cisco network admin and my laptop has a usb port and no serial port and I needed to console onto routers and switches anyways after much searching I installed minicom and set it up from the link below so just in case someone has the same problem.

I am sure that lots of other options are available but this is what I did.
